Jonathan van Rooyen, Chief Investment Officer & Partner

Infrastructure specialist. Tough love. Driven to succeed.

Hi Jonathan. Have you got an elevator speech?

I’m Chief Investment Officer at of the Core Infrastructure Fund. I joined the firm in 2019, bringing with me more than 20 years of experience in the infrastructure investment sector. With our Core Infrastructure Fund, we deliver unlisted infrastructure investment to smaller investors generating bond-like volatility and equity-like returns over the long-term.

So, you’ve watched infrastructure mature as an asset class?

Yes. Prior to joining Invest Unlisted, I managed a $2.5 billion open-ended unlisted infrastructure fund with assets in Australia and the United Kingdom. As Executive Director at Hastings Funds Management for about 10 years I was involved in transactions, asset management, and strategy development.

You had an impressive run with KPMG as well, correct?

Yes. I also spent 10 years at KPMG Corporate Finance where I worked with an incredibly talented team to establish their Global Infrastructure Valuations division, which culminated in my appointment to the KPMG Partnership in 2007.

What does your portfolio management experience look like?

I managed the $2.5 billion Infrastructure Fund over a period of three years delivering in excess of 10% per annum including annual cash yield of 4% to the investors. Prior to that I was the inaugural Portfolio Manager for the US$200 million Korean Government’s National Pension Service Corporate Partnership Fund.

Tell us about your skills in investment and asset management…

I led the acquisition of stakes in Perth Airport, North Queensland Airports and Envirogen Power Generation. I was a Director on Queensland Airports Limited, a Director on M5 and M4 Toll roads in Sydney, and Director on Envirogen Power. I was also a member of the Investment Committee during my time at Hastings Funds Management.

What’s your experience specific to strategy and market development?

I developed and implemented a Strategic Review of the external management arrangements for The Infrastructure Fund. I also led Hastings’ Asia market-entry strategy, established the Hastings Korea office and built deep relationships with Korean pension funds and LPs.

Can you describe your business philosophy in one word?

I’d have to say …resilient.

Real. Concrete. Investments.
